PBMT Certification

The Perioperative Blood Management Technologist exam is offered three times a year for Autotransfusionist or Platelet Gel/Stem Cell device operators in the operative setting. Please see below for application and exam dates, prerequisite requirements, application requirements, and additional information.

June 21 – July 23, 2021
September 20 – October 22, 2021

May 12- May 14, 2021
August 18- August 20, 2021
November 17- November 19, 2021

Prerequisite Requirements for Sitting for the Exam:

  • The applicant must have a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • The applicant must be practicing in the field of blood management completing a minimum of fifty (50) autotransfusion procedures (those involving an semiautomatic cell processing/washing device) with evidence thereof. IBBM recommends a minimum one year of experience for all examinees.
  • The applicant must produce evidence of the clinical location(s), date performed, procedure, surgeon, type of procedure and whether the case is adult/pediatric.

Application Process & Required Elements

Step 1: Submit Application Form Online 
The PBMT Certification Online Application Form will require candidates to submit the following information:

  1. Personal Information
  2. Employer Information
  3. Facility Information and Confirming Individual Information

Step 2: Submit Required Forms & Paperwork
After submitting the demographic information through the online application, applicants will also need to submit the following paperwork to IBBM at ibbm@amsect.org.

  1. Clinical Activity Report: Fifty (50) clinical cases utilizing cell saver technique performed during the previous year. This list must include the Hospital/Clinic, date,  surgeon, procedure performed, Surgeon, Procedure Type, Adult/Pediatric.  Procedures must be specific (Total Hip Arthroplasty, Posterior Spinal Fusion, etc.). Procedure categories will not be accepted (Ortho, Vascular, Emergency, Heart, etc.).   Procedure Type must be Autotransfusion, Platelet Gel or Stem Cell
  2. Copy of High School or College Diploma or Copy of Clinical Credentialing (CCP, RN, LPN, MD, etc.)
  3. Authorization for Release of Information and Case Verification Form 
  4. Proctor Application for online exam.

Step 3: Submit Certification Exam Fee

  1. Non-refundable $200.00 fee to sit for exam
    • Note: a $50 late fee will be applied to any applications submitted after the application window.
    • Note: Individuals retaking the exam will be assessed a $100 examination retake fee.

Step 4: IBBM Verifies Information
Upon receipt and verification of all application materials, an email will be sent to your proctor with detailed exam instructions approximately five (5) days before the opening of the exam.  This letter will detail the exam protocol, provide the necessary username, password and test verification form to be completed by the proctor at the end of the exam.  An email will be sent to you approximately five (5) days before the opening of the exam.  This letter will serve as notice that you are eligible to sit for the exam and your proctor has been sent the necessary information for the exam.

Step 5: Take Certification Exam

Examinees may select the specific day they would like to take their exam within the testing window and will be given 3 hours to complete 100 question exam. Preliminary results (exam day results) are provided immediately after the exam is completed. The exam day results are not finalized until the exam window closes and the exams are re-scored. The official exam score and results are mailed via USPS mail approximately 90 days after the close of the exam.

If the applicant passes the exam, they will receive a Perioperative Blood Management Technologist Certificate at the address provided on the application.

If the applicant does not pass the exam, they will be sent a letter showing the areas of deficiencies.  If the applicant decides to retake the exam a new application must be submitted.  If the applicant retakes the exam within nine (9) months the fee is $100.00 USD. PBMT Recertification

Certified PBMTs are required to recertify each year through the submission of an online application, a case report of at least 40 clinical cases, a case verification form, and a $100 recertification fee.
